I'm sorry to report that one of our long-term members, and a truly great person, has passed away. This past Wednesday, Tony Koella died. Just this past year, Tony was awarded the Tennessee Ornithological Society Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions towards the preservation of natural wildlife habitats and conservation efforts. A memorial service will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Saturday, March 4th at 3:00 p.m. While a long-term illness made it difficult for him in recent years, the last couple weeks were extra special as he and Mary Laura French, a dedicated friend for many years, married just two weeks ago. It made me very happy to hear this, and I know Tony must still be smiling because of her :-) I am scheduled to lead a field trip for KTOS tomorrow at that time, but plan to attend the service. I mention this here so that anyone who intends to go on the field trip but would also like to attend the service may contact me and we can try to ride together. I do have someone to meet the group at 3:00 in west Knoxville, and to lead them to Cades Cove where I will eventually join you. We will have a moment of silence in Cades Cove in honor of Tony.
