[TN-Bird] To varnish or not to varnish, that is the question!

I bought a new bluebird box. It is made of western cedar. I wondered if I
should just put it out as is, or if I could put a coat of varnish or Linseed
oil
to help protect it from the elements. I don't want to put any thing on the
box, if the chemicals in the substance could harm the birds in anyway. I would
appreciate it if anyone can give me an answer.
Thanks and Happy Birding!
By the way, my Rufous Hummingbird is still here in my backyard!
