Yes, the World list was on the report as well as that for Mexico and South
America. And I did say that I thought the World list was the most important
one, and I only wish I had the time and money to go to other countries! I
regret I did not include the West Indies/Caribbean in which for 2008 James
Brooks is our number one lister at a rank of 9 with 347 birds, an impressive
result. I will certainly include West Indies/Caribbean in the 2009 report. I
want to be as inclusive as possible. With regard to the idea of listing,
needless to say the activity has a long and storied tradition in birding with
many, many publications. My overall philosophy is that human activity is not
intrinsically meaningful, but that activity is meaningful to the extent that we
find meaning in the things we do. Some people are passionate about birding and
listing, others are equally passionate about stamp collective, model
railroading, football, music, various academic pursuits, etc. We spend a
!
!
very short time on this planet and unless the activity is unethical or criminal
I am willing to encourage and support it regardless of whether it is my cup of
tea or not.
