[TN-Bird] Ten Islands Shorebirds

Ten Islands section, Douglas Lake, Cocke county
8/21/08, 5-8:00 PM; by canoe
Lake elevation: 972 ft (down 4 ft. since 8/16)

The shoreline has changed drastically in the past few days - the only  
mud at Rankin Bottoms is at the upper end of a narrow stream, and the  
prime waterbird habitat is 2 miles downlake in the Ten Islands area.   
We launched at the Leadvale boat ramp and were glad to have a  
trolling motor to push us against a 10 mph wind out of the south.   
Shorebirds were concentrated along the mudflat edges,  a couple  
hundred waders foraged in the shallows.  The nearest land viewpoints  
would be from Brown Hollow Rd., about a mile distant.
