[TN-Bird] Ten Islands 9/23/07

Cocke & Jefferson counties, Sunday 4:00-8:00 PM

Douglas Lake (@955.6 ft.) has receded to Walters Bridge. We put in our
canoe at the Leadvale ramp and paddled on the French Broad River through the
Ten Islands area, then motored to the south end of Dutch Bottoms - a seven
mile trip. It was too dark to continue around Taylor's Bend, the hottest
birding spot on upper Douglas Lake lately.

Least sandpipers were dispersed here & there all along the riverbanks, some
hunkering in depressions, or huddling by driftwood. We probably missed
quite a few. Except for 3 SANDERLINGS, we didn't see much at Dutch Bottoms,
the usual mallards, some killdeer, cormorants, and great blues.

Ten Islands' birds:

Green-winged teal (2)
Pied-billed grebe
Great blue heron (18)
Great egret (40)
Black-crowned night heron (5)
Osprey
Bald eagle

Semipalmated plover
Killdeer (105)
Greater yellowlegs
Lesser yellowlegs
Spotted sandpiper
Least sandpiper (58)
Pectoral sandpiper
