With the extreme drought conditions keeping the level of Douglas Lake much below normal levels (about 20 ft below normal summer pool level at it highest point this summer) I realize that this is an abnormal year. Still the number and species of shorebirds that have been present this fall on upper Douglas Lake is beyond impressive. It is also worthwhile to keep in mind that had the year went as called for in the new ROS plan with drawdown starting after Labor Day, the lake would be at about 970-980 ft and all of this shorebird habitat we've been enjoying the last 2 months would still be under 10-20 ft of water. Rankin Bottoms would just be getting at prime habitat conditions. It is clear that an earlier drawdown schedule greatly benefits the shorebirds (and birders). Of course it is also clear that early drawdown is a hinderance to boaters and land owners on the lake... some of whom were never able to use their docks this summer because of low water levels.
