Douglas Lake (@956.8 ft), Cocke & Jefferson counties 9/15/07, 4:30-7:30 PM, clear & turning cool We launched our canoe at the south end of Dutch Bottoms and headed across to Taylor's (or just "Taylor") Bend. There were just a few shorebirds and about 30 great egrets and great blues at Dutch Bottoms. Most of the birds that we saw were at the Bend, especially in the shallow embayment that opens to the north. Peep numbers were way down, and we didn't see most of the uncommon species (willet, black-bellied & American golden plover, Baird's & buff-breasted SP, short-billed dowitcher) that were present on 9/12. The windbirds disappeared that evening when a peregrine falcon raced into the area and captured a peep. They returned after a while but seemed agitated, constantly shifting & regrouping. The cold front likely influenced the turnover -with more yellowlegs and pectoral sandpipers moving in.
