Jan. 3, 2008 TVA and Robco Lakes Shelby Co. TN Tunica Co. Mississippi The high numbers of Greater Scaup continue at TVA Lake with unexplained lower numbers of Lesser Scaup from earlier in the season. Looks like the scoters and Long-tailed Ducks have moved on south. A dozen Canvasbacks were nice along with a few Ring-necked, Hooded Mergansers and about 145 Ring-billed Gulls. I spent some time with the huge flock of waterfowl and relocated the leucistic Lesser Scaup but the birds of the day were the Canvasbacks that kept dropping in with my high count ending at 550+. Cans are just super birds. The largest flocks of gulls I've ever seen anywhere are suddenly hanging out at the Tunica Landfill and surrounding staging areas. Best birds gleaned and photographed were up to 7 LAUGHING GULLS, 1 first cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and a first cycle THAYER'S all seen along Counce Road.
