Earlier this year the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (formerly Tennessee
Conservation League), an
independent organization representing hunters, requested Tennessee Wildlife
Resources Agency (TWRA)
move to implement hunting of Sandhill Cranes.
I can remember reading in one of the late Florida author's, Marjorie Kinnen
Rawlings', books (CROSS CREEK, maybe) that white ibis were legally hunted for
food in the early 1900's. They early settlers called them "curlews," and they
all had a favorite recipe for "Curlew Purlew." It almost destroyed the ibis
population until the "fad" subsided. I THINK ibis were included in the law
that also protected the egrets from being hunted for their plumes with which
the
stylish ladies hats were festooned. We sure don't need to legalize the
hunting of cranes. I hardly think crane would be any tastier than the fowl we
raise
for food.
