[TN-Bird] TERNS

Sept 15, 2007
Louisville Pt Park

Blount Co.

Sorry for the late post, I've been laid up with a back injury since a long
day of counting last Saturday for the NAMC in Blount Co. It was a perfect
day for birding with frenetic warblers and thrushes foraging after a good
night's migration. I had 17 warbler species, the best a repeat of last years
CONNECTICUT WARBLER not far from last year's location. The highlight for me,
however, were the three species of terns at Louisville Point Park-FORSTER'S,
CASPIAN, and BLACK TERNS-1, 1 and 4 individuals respectively. I had long
awaited seeing black terns there, being sure they must come through
sometime. Typically, if you are standing by the boat ramp the terns are off
to the left where the water must be shallower. Sand bars are exposed there
when the river is drawn down and at current levels there is but one small
rock exposed, just enough for the Caspian to sit. I never saw it flying. The
forster's and blacks were circling together in the general vicinity. Sure
made my day. 90 species wasn't bad either. Jean Alexander will have the
totals when all parties have reported in.

Good Birding
