Jefferson County, 11/23/07, 4-5:30 PM
Douglas Lake elevation: 947.6 ft
The lake is 3 ft higher than its low point, about 3 weeks ago; the mudflat=
s south of the bridges are mostly flooded & most of the shorebirds have mov=
ed on. Meanwhile, the biggest raft of warterfowl (1000+) that I've ever se=
en on Douglas floated about 2 miles downlake from our vantage point at the =
Spring Creek overlook. We drove along Oak Grove Rd. to see if we could get=
a better look and wound up at the Shady Holler Campground, around the bend=
from the duck mass, and found another about the same size out on the lake.=
It was too dark at that point to make out the species.
Partial list:
Green-winged teal (65)
Hooded merganser (18)
Great blue heron (106)
Bald eagle (1 adult)
Am. coot (3)
Killdeer (125)
Least sandpiper (5)
Dunlin (2)
Bonaparte's gull (200+)
Ring-billed gull (300+)
