[TN-Bird] Surf Scoter - Union Co

I saw the Satterfields' note yesterday afternoon but didn't have a
chance then to look for their Surf Scoter. After taking care of
some honey-do's, I headed that way Friday afternoon (28 Dec 2007).
The bird was present on the pond and actively diving and feeding.
It is an immature female. I took a few distant photos in the rain
and gloom. They are IDable but not that great.

It's not a very short drive from Knoxville just because it is an
out-of-the-way spot. I'd recommend either Tazwell Pike or
Maynardville Pike to Hwy 61. The pond is at the intersection
of Hwy 61 and Tater Valley Rd (Google map it for best directions).
There's not much access to pull over but you need to get on
Tater Valley Rd to see the pond and bird.

It's funny, I knew exactly which pond Stephen and Rebecca were
talking about. This was on the way to my grandparents' farm.
I haven't been that way in 10-15 years but it brought back some
memories today. The owners of that pond always kept some decoys
on the pond which would lure in some ducks. Sure enough, there
were 3 Canvasback-like decoys (but one had a blue head) on the
pond today. Looks like the same ones they had all those years
ago. It was always a reliable spot to find a kingfisher, either
at the pond or along the creek that runs along Hwy 61 here.
