Migrating birds can detect changes in air pressure which occur with changes in weather. I don't think Hurricane Frances had anything to do with the direction your nighthawks were flying. According to the latest weather maps, the leading edge of the storm clouds spawned by Frances are in eastern Florida. The weather radar for south-central Tennessee and northern Alabama does show several rainstorms, and more are forecast through tomorrow. This rainstorm activity is not related to Frances, and may have caused the nighthawks to reverse direction.
