Van Works Rd & Proctor City Rd., (off of Hwy 78)
Lake Co.
Another one of those bad weather = great birds days...
I spent much of this cold, windy, and rainy afternoon in Lake County sifting
through the hundreds of gulls. It paid off with 6 species of gulls! I had
a dark 1st winter Lesser Black-backed Gull and one of the dark 1st winter
Iceland Gulls on the south side Van Works Rd. amongst the hundreds of
Ring-billed Gulls, Bonaparte's Gulls, and Herring Gulls. There were about
300-400 hundred gulls trading in and out of this area. A Western Meadowlark
sang from the north side of the road 3-4 times while I was there.
On Proctor City Rd. there were at least 800-1000 gulls present and more
continued to trickle in the entire time I was there. Among these were 2
light 1st winter Iceland Gulls (side by side) and a dark 1st winter Thayer's
Gull. There was an immature Blad Eagle in the trees behind where the gukks
were but he didn't seem interested and the gulls pretty much ignored it as
well. There was a little excitement once as all the gulls got into the air
when a male Northern Harrier decided to take a cruise right through the
middle of the crowd (just for fun no doubt). The frenzy was short lived and
they soon all settled back in but it was nice to see those beautiful
Icelands and the Thayer's in the air for a couple of minutes.
No sign of any of the California Gulls but they may have been around as
there were several hundred gulls seen swarming over the prison grounds but
too far away to see well.
I also had an adult male Merlin on Tatumville Rd. in Dyer Co. this morning.
Good birding,
Mark Greene
