Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN, June 29, 2004 LEAST BITTERN: Nest with 4 large downy young ( 6+ inches long with necks extended ) Nests to date this season: 1 with 4 young, 1 with 4 eggs (possibly still incubating), 1 new complete, 1 new unfinished, 1 last year, 1 looks like 2-years old, 1 looks like very old with recent green updates. Adult in one location making sounds like 4-note song but just 3 notes and softer, possibly talking to young Adult making alarm sounds, resembling Green Heron squawk but lower Adult flying straight up out of cattails to nearby limb, watching me closely (couldn't find nest) VIRGINIA RAIL: Flushed adult from nest with 9 eggs. Nest in large area with nothing but cattails except for one clumb of rushes containing the nest. Nest barely above water level. Nest with one young, also in cattails, made of cattails, just above water level. Adults extremely active in area, probably the other young were hiding nearby. Two additional nests looking like Virginia Rail nests, just above water level. BLUE-WINGED TEAL: One adult female on gravel road with Mallard (females or full-size young), a little rough looking but able to fly just fine. WILLOW FLYCATCHER: Adult feeding 3 young. GREAT EGRET, 2: Forgot to include this June 25. A Red-wing and a Kingbird were chasing one egret which was squawking and desperately trying to dodge and evade them. RED-SHOULDERED HAWK: 2 large beautiful juveinles flying and resting together. Black above except for white patches near the ends of the wings "windows", looking all white below except black wing tips, in other lighting fine streaks and dim bands visible. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD: estimated 30 - 40 nests this season; the dozen or so I have seen in the last 2 weeks have max 3 eggs and/or young. Todays finds included 1 with 1 egg, 1 with 2 hatched and 1 egg, 1 with 3 very new young. I have digital pictures all of the kinds of nests if anyone would like one or more.
