Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN
LEAST BITTERN: June 21, nest with 4 eggs, no adult nearby, same on June 22 and
23 and eggs were ambient temperature, assuming this nest is abandoned, perhaps
eggs got too cold in severe rain
June 22, nest with 0 eggs, looks good but like last year nest, tilted
June 23, nest with 0 eggs, looks more worn than June 22 find, 2 years old?
June 23, nest under construction, cattail fragments in nest still green, adult
nearby
All nests within 200 ft of each other, all about 14" above 18" water depth,
all close (5 ft) to open water or open channel
Two adults singing near water lillies, 1000 ft away from nests
Another adult watching me wade along east side of water, let me approach to 10
ft, nearby nest likely
VIRGINIA RAIL: June 21, 6 young had left nest, 3 eggs remaining, adult still
incubating
June 22 & 23, 2 eggs remaining, adjults not incubating, not protective of
nest, these 2 eggs likely sterile or dead
WILLOW FLYCATCHER: Still incubating 4 eggs
ORCHARD ORIOLE: Female feeding young (near Willow Flycatcher nest)
