[TN-Bird] Standifer Gap Marsh

Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN
10/24/05 8:30 - 10:30 am, south end
SNOW GOOSE, dark form, 1, with a flock of about 140 Canada Geese

Virginia Rail, 8+, very active and vocal

Sora, probably 2+, single notes only, hard to distinguish from the high note a
Virginia sometimes makes

PURPLE MARTIN, about 60, about half glossy black all over and half white
underneath as in females or young, came in from the south flying more or less
in a group, circled the marsh a few times, then left to the north.

TREE SWALLOW, 3, not with the Martins, hawking above the water.

Marsh Wren, 1; Sedge Wren, 0

Palm Warbler, 2

Swamp Sparrow, at least 18, very active (they make it hard to see the wrens)

Deer, 1 adult and 1 half-grown

MINK (I think), crossing gravel road, dark all over, too small for an otter.

Mounds, 6+, brand new and/or under construction (Muskrats). They are 3-4 ft in
diameter at water level, 12-18 inches above water level, with a ramp from below
water to the top, constructed of fresh cattails and mud.
