[TN-Bird] Spring has sprung in mountains !

TN-Birders:
It is a wonderful spring day in the mountains with
8 inches of snow cover in Shady Valley, Johnson Co.,
and 10 inches or more expected at Roan Mountain
in Carter Co.

The American Woodcocks are, no doubt, incubating
eggs with their eyes and beak sticking out of the
3 inches of snow at Johnson City and more than an
inch in Bristol.

Great Horned Owls are brooding young beneath
nature's great white blanket.

I am sure the Yellow-crowned Nigh-Herons and many
Great Blue Heron's nest are likewise in trees covered
with the snow. So are the Red-tailed and Red-shouldered
Hawks and other species.

Chris O'Bryan called this morning and said the 8-inches
in Shady Valley covered the roads and limbs were bending
and breaking. The power was coming and going and
so were birds to his feeder.

This is not that unexpected because I remember about 10
inches of snow at Bristol about April 10 several years ago.
Late March snows turn up every now and then.

The temperature is above freezing so most species
are not having an problem. But I do think about whatever
Yellow-throated Warblers, waterthrushes and Black-throated
Green Warblers that might be getting a little excitement
after returning from more tropical areas. Nature provides for
them.

The sun is breaking through here and much of it is melting.
Larry McDaniel called and said there were 3 inches at Johnson City and
Daniel Godfrey called and said they had a good snow cover at Greeneville, TN.

Spring has sprung. All the flowering fruit trees and early spring flowers
are peeping their heads throught the snow to enjoy spring.

Let's go birding....
