The TN Big Day record for February at the beginning of the month stood at 97
species, a record that seemed in reach for even Southeast TN. However, it was
shattered by Jeff and Mark about 2 weeks ago with 107 species. This didn't
change our enthusiasm for we thought we could still get 100 species.
After 13.5 hours and 248 miles, visiting Hamilton, Bradley, Meigs, Rhea,
Bledsoe, and Sequatchie counties we finished the day at 99 species. With a
little more planning we could have easily broke 100 but I'm not sure about 107.
The highlights of the day were Red-breasted Merganser (Rhea), Golden Eagle
(Meigs), Peregrine Falcon (Hamilton), Barn Owl (Seq.) Rufous Hummingbird
(Ham.), Horned Lark (Bledsoe), Harris's Sparrow (Meigs), and Brewer's Blackbird
(Seq.).
Big misses were Ruddy Duck, Cooper's Hawk, Least Sandpiper, Hairy Woodpecker,
Tree Swallow, Hermit Thrush, Loggerhead Shrike, and Pine Siskin. We just ran
out of time. Oh well, there is always next month or next year.
