[tn-bird] South Blount County

Tapoco WMA
Blount County
10/20/02

Hi Folks,

Tracey Everson and I braved the cool wet air to walk the dog
yesterday. She makes it hard to bird, but gives good excuses to get
outside...

We went to a place that simply says it's a WMA, with no other name on
the sign yesterday morning. A small tag on a tree says Tapoco, so
that's what I call it. It is due west of the southern end of
Foothills Parkway, off of a side road from state route 336.

We saw at least 2 WILD TURKEY. Woodpeckers were cooperative, with
one HAIRY, several DOWNY, a couple PILEATED, 2 RED-BELLIED and
several FLICKERS, as well as a couple WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. One
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK braved the less than ideal weather overhead.
Tracey saw a thrush, but not well enough to ID it. Blue Jays
continue to trickle through.

A small feral field near the parking lot was much more interesting
than the woods, with a number of WHITE-THROATED, many SONG and at
least 2 SWAMP SPARROWS. I was getting excited with all the sparrows,
but couldn't pick out anything unusual. Ron, I'm getting jealous
with all you've seen this fall! All I've seen so far is a poor look
at an unknown Ammodramus a couple weeks ago! I think I'll have to go
into the sabotage business with all the mowers in Townsend...

A NASHVILLE WARBLER really stood out with the many YELLOW-RUMPEDS.
This was the first time this season I've seen a bunch of
"butter-butts" in one tree. Perhaps the best birds of the day were
a couple of very active, singing HOUSE WRENS. We again had both
KINGLETS and were treated to great views of a couple of very fresh
looking BLUE-HEADED VIREOS - maybe the last I'll see this year?

BTW, the Sharp-shinned was part of a small run I'm having... I've
seen exactly one per day for at least 5 days now.

Good day!

Charlie
