Hi again, No sooner than I "sent" the earlier message from here in Charlotte Park, West Nashville, Davidson County, near the Cumberland River than the song sparrow came around the edges of the deck, just outside the French doors, and into the dead grape leaves. I sat and watched it as it worked its way around and noticed that it picked up a milkweed type, fuzzy, cottony seed and flew toward the back and down behind the deck with it. I have an old woodpile under there which has plenty of spaces for the sparrow to nest. I wonder! It's out there right now, eating away. It was joined momentarily by a second song sparrow (mate?) that quickly flew back down behind the deck in the same area. I hope they are nesting. Once upon a time, in Ontario, I found a scolding song sparrow in great distress. I went to the area to which it kept flying and scolding, found a snake laying across the nest keeping two live babies held down while engorging another nestling. I dragged that snake off the nest and took it to another habitat so far away that, if it came back, the babies would be fledged and gone. As I was dragging the snake away, the adult checked the nest, then flew up to the power line and sang "thanks" to me. The next day, as I was leaving for home, I stopped by to check the nest and babies. I wasn't scolded at all, but, as I walked back to my car, "Mama" flew back up to the power line and sang to me again! The goldfinch returned to the thistle feeder simultaneously with the song sparrow's return to the deck. All those h. finches and h. sparrows returned with babies to feed, and, now, I need to go restock the feeders! Ah, Spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!
