We spotted the snowy owl today, 1-23-2009, in Maury County. We arrived at
the Cracker Barrel around 2 p.m. We scanned the neighboring fields, with no owl

nor birders in sight. At the restaurant, the waitress showed us a spectacular
picture she had taken of the owl in flight. She said he had been in the
field next to the restaurant two days ago. Since there was a red barn across
from
the restaurant, we thought that was the infamous landmark. However, the
hostess told us people were looking for the owl on the other side of the
bridge.
As we drove toward the RippaVilla Mansion around 2:45 p.m., we saw several
cars pulled over including a police car. We parked at the closed "GM entrance."
We were told the police were telling people they could not park on the side
of the road because it was an "emergency lane," but the GM entrance was
acceptable. The owl stayed stationary in the field, quite a distance off, for
the
duration of our visit. He preened and yawned to entertain us. A generous
birder let us look through her scope. As we were leaving, a local stopped to
ask
what all the fuss was about. She had been seeing cars stopped there for the
past week or so.

The owl blends in with the field much more than I had anticipated,
especially at such a distance with the naked eye. I do not think we would have
been
able to spot it on our own if we hadn't seen people already stopped and
looking.

Thank you all for your directions and reports!
