Yesterday (4/29)Harold Howell and I checked out some of the areas to be
covered on the Smokies field trip during the Tennessee Ornithological
Society's spring meeting. Black-throated Blue Warblers were easy to find, and
we got several very nice views. Canada Warblers were singing at Alum Cave
trail, but they weren't very cooperative. We saw Black-capped Chickadees
investigating a likely looking cavity fairly close to a tree with 3
Blackburnian Warblers singing and carrying on.
Higher up at Clingman's Dome and Newfound Gap Chestnut-sided Warblers were
singing away. We saw a Raven from Indian Gap on the road up to Clingman's
Dome as well as a Red-breasted Nuthatch excavating on an old snag.
No crossbills yesterday, but we're hoping for better luck Saturday. No grouse
yesterday, but we did see one last week (when the temperature was 32 up on
top!).
Trees above 3000' are just beginning to leaf out in the Smokies, and
wildflowers completely cover the ground in some spots. It's still very early
spring up there.
Hope to see some of you at the spring meeting,
Chris Welsh
