[TN-Bird] Smokies Birding - sun 6/8

Sunday,6/8 my mother and I birded along Newfound Gap Rd. in the GSMNP, then
briefly checked out the Greenbrier area. This was my 3rd Sunday in 4 weeks
birding up the mtn. We saw relatively few birds compared to 5/18 and 5/25 but
did manage to get lifers when we saw at least 7 RED CROSSBILLS in a tree at the
Newfound Gap parking lot. We also found the Yellow Lady's Slipper and Rosy
Twisted Stalk flowers listed on the KTOS field trip posting from 5/31. There
were many Lady's Slippers between the Deep Creek trailhead and the next pulloff
ahead but all but 2 we saw were dried up. Locations birded were-- Sugarlands
parking lot, Chimney Tops trailhead, Alum Cave trailhead, Newfound Gap, 1st
pulloff on NC side, Deep Creek trailhead(NC), and Indian Gap(Clingman's Dome
Rd.).

Partial list 6/8(~8am-3pm):

Black-thr Blue - 1 m (Alum Cave), couple more heard
Black-thr Green - 3-4 heard
Chestnut-Sided - 1 (Deep Creek)
N. Parula - 2 heard (Sugarlands,Greenbrier)
Blue-Headed Vireo - 3 (Newfound Gap), couple more heard
Red-Eyed Vireo - 1-2 heard
Indigo Bunting - 3 (Newfound Gap,Deep Creek)
Black-Capped Chickadee - 2 (Indian Gap)
Dark-Eyed Junco - 3
Golden-cr Kinglet - 1 (Indian Gap)
Red-Breasted Nuthatch - 1 heard (Indian Gap)
Red Crossbill - 7 (Newfound Gap)

On 5/18 I spent almost 3 hours at the 1st NC pulloff in varied levels of rain
just inside the woods getting nice looks at EVERYTHING. I saw the most
beautiful Blackburnian Warbler i've ever seen within 10 ft, Black-thr Blue,
Black-thr Green, Canada, Golden-cr Kinglets, Red-br Nuthatches(within 4 ft),
Brown Creepers, Juncos, Blue-Headed Vireos, and Veery(one with leg band). I was
soaked and didn't care--it was a day to remember. On 5/25 with Mom, Alum Cave
trail was the best spot with close looks at Canada and Black-thr Blue-- as well
as Chestnut-Sided, Black-thr Green, Veery, Red-Eyed and Blue-Headed Vireo,
another thrush sp. and and an unIDed Chickadee.
