[TN-Bird] Small owl in Western Greene Co.

I was returning from Greeneville yesterday evening, and thought I would cut
through Bays Mountain Rd. in the North Western tip of Greene co. for a few
Chuck-Wills songs. I did hear four along the road (and two more in Hamblen
Co.) but at my last stop I heard a piece of bark fall off a cedar tree 15
feet away. I saw a wing flap before the hunter got still with what looked
like a moth. It was already 9:15 pm, and my light was about gone, but I put
my 7x35 on him and saw yellow eyes, brown and white markings on his breast
and NO ear tufts. My heart raced at the possibility of low elevation
Saw-whet! I didn't remember at the time to look for the White face markings
(field guide was at home), I took a few steps toward the bird, and it then
flew into the cedars. When I got home I read where young Screech owls,
don't show prominant ear tufts so I am leaning toward a Screech. But I may
need to make a few more visits to the area just in case. Ben Britton
