[TN-Bird] Singing Bell's Vireo - Ensley Bottoms

5-26-07
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

After receiving a report of a territorial Bell's Vireo singing on private
property in Lake Co earlier this week, I decided to check out a few areas of
habitat that I've been watching over the last few years. I struck out at Sunk
Lake in Lauderdale Co, and again at a couple of places at Lower Hatchie but
struck pay dirt back at home. I had a male singing up a storm and moving around

as if on territory. It roamed in a pattern for over an hour in a stand of
regenerating hardwood trees. The habitat is almost identical to the territory
where Mike found his nesting Reelfoot birds.

After easing around trying to get a good look at the bird, I ended up
getting two photos around 3 this afternoon. A couple of years ago, I had a
singing
bird on private property in June, just south of TN in Marshal Co, MS. Mike
Todd and I had one bird singing on territory on our "Big Tic Day" a couple of
weeks ago, at Wapanocca NWR just across the river in AR in identical habitat.

These birds maybe expanding their breeding areas eastward from their
Arkansas habitat, just as other western species have been doing over the last
few
years. Dense, young second growth seems to suit them just fine. Now to find a
nest, which is going to be a trick in those tangles. I had a BIG TICK DAY for
sure!!

I also had 4 pair of Blue Grosbeaks building nests at Ensley. I got photos
of one female with nesting material. We normally have at least 3 Loggerhead
Shrike territories down there but I've only seen 2 pair this year, they trimmed

the trees where one pair has nested for years. One pair has fledged 3 young
while the other pair appear to just be setting up.

Good Birding !!!
