Sightings Report 16 Nov 2006 Ensley Bottoms Area, Memphis, Shelby County
Once again at the Ensley Bottoms area, 4 days straight the type of birds
present are about the same, daily numbers are fluctuating minimally. Today
however after counting waterfowl, I sat down by the earth complex and
scanned the fields of the area. My last scan produced 22 raptors soaring,
hovering, diving, rising, sitting on a pole or flying away with a furry
creature for lunch. Now some of the finds were long distance, but over half
were id'd as RT Hawks, 2 were Northern Harriers. The rest most likely one of
the two. Also seen was a Loggerhead Shrike over the old pumpkin patch and an
Am Kestrel at the other end of the patch. Modos' and some Starlings rounded
out the fields.
Location: Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp
Observation date: 11/16/06,1220-1240pm
Notes: Back again on Riverport Rd. More Rain last night is helping the
dried up ponds and sloughs, There's now more water to swim in than the last
few days in places. Still good mud flats. Mergansers really strutting their
stuff.
