From 4:00 - 4:35 PM this afternoon (Dec. 25) Harry LeGrand and I watched two
Short-eared Owls and 1-2 N. Harriers flying around the large pasture area
bounded by Hillendale, Winningham, and Dunbar Rds. about 2 miles southeast
of Lake Tansi in southern Cumberland County. We found a nice viewing area on
a hill top in the middle of this area, reached by turning off to,
unfortunately, a new development, Shadow Mountain Estates. This paved road
is off Dunbar Road, 0.6 miles south of the intersection with Clint(on) Lowe
Road. From this hill, the owls were seen in good light (plenty of sunlight
this afternoon at 4:00 PM) viewing north toward Hillendale Rd. This expanse
of pasture is quite hilly, and the birds tended to fly low and dip behind
the small ridges. Even though the grass is short enough to see them if they
land, it may take some time to find them.
Also in the area was an adult Bald Eagle at Lake Tansi (a couple have been
seen there frequently this fall) along with a couple of Horned Grebes and
the usual water birds. Lake Hiawatha (not on the DeLorme Atlas, but can be
seen from Forte's Restaurant, east off Dunbar Rd. just north of Lake Tansi)
had the usual Ring-necked Ducks with a male Canvasback (missed on the CBC).
Also nearby, the Loggerhead Shrike found by Steve Stedman on the Crossville
CBC on Dec. 17 was still along Blaylock Rd. about 0.3 miles south of
Vandever Rd near the intersection with Emerson Stone Rd.
