[TN-Bird] Shorebirds and B-b Whistling Duck - Ensley

July 16, 2008
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

Working in and out of downtown, I've been able to sneak a few peeks in at
Ensley. For three straight days, I've only been able to find the male
Black-bellied Whistling Duck which stirs possibilities..........In with the
Mallards
were a single Wood Duck and 3 Blue-winged Teal (2 females and an eclipse
plumaged male).

Shorebirds are showing up in larger numbers every day with totals now
topping a thousand. Least Sandpipers lead the parade but Pectoral and
Semipalmated
are now sprinkled throughout the flocks. Of the dozen or so molting Western
Sandpipers only one was a long-billed female and all are heavily molted
showing bright splashes of red based scaps which soon will be dropped. A total
of
10 species of Wind Birds was barely
reached Wednesday when a Greater Yellowlegs dropped in.

The Western Kingbirds continue tending their nest at the stream plant. The
Mississippi River has finally started falling about 6 inches a day but still
over 21 feet at Memphis.
