Ensley Bottoms,
Shelby Co. TN
The numbers dwindle as the temp drops and the autumn winds, coolly sweep down
from the North. Gone are the steamy hot days, when 20 plus species of
multitudes of ravenously, feeding shorebirds, with the back feathers raised,
venting
their body heat to only a slightly cooler atmosphere, can be seen.
Only 12 species could be pulled out with still only 1 Buff-breasted that took
over an hour to find. Killdeer, a few Black-necked Stilts, 1 Greater YL still
frequents TVA Lake, Lesser YL, 2 Solitary, 1 Spotted, Semipalmated, Western,
Least, Stilt and Wilson's Snipe filled out the list. It has been a very poor
year for both Buff-breasted and Baird's at the pits.
Bert Sharpe and I had the movement of raptors from TVA Lake later with two
groups of White Pelicans (76-26) taking advantage of the North winds along with
groups of DC Cormorants and large groups of resting ducks were lazing around
waiting for the night flight to leave. On the Mississippi River, I had a flock
of 27 No. Pintail streamlining it south, along with Blue-winged and
Green-winged Teal, No. Shoveler, Ruddy Ducks, 2 Pied-billed Grebe and
Ring-billed Gulls.
Let's see what the winds blew in today................
Good Birding!!!
