[TN-Bird] Shelby Forest

Visited Shelby Forest Friday and Saturday 1/13 and 1/14. Near Poplar
Tree Lake Friday, I observed a golden crowned kinglet in a dogwood tree.

A small flock of Canada Geese was on the edge of the lake. Saw

several other golden crowned kinglets while driving out of the park.

Saturday I observed a lone bald eagle circling over Poplar Tree Lake.

Followed it with 10x binoculars getting great looks at it as it turned
in the sunlight.

While hiking through the woods nearby, I found a colony of red-headed

woodpeckers, one immature. Also spotted a barred owl, which flew a

few hundred feet ahead each time I approached its position. I also got

close to a pileated woodpecker. I heard another calling to the West.

I also noted red bellied woodpeckers, and a hairy woodpecker. Other

species observed include tufted titmouse and Carolina chickadees.

Feeling jazzed at some pretty good sightings that day, I went for a run
that evening at dusk. Jogging down Oakley Drive in Germantown

approaching Poplar Pike, I swear I heard a great horned owl. As I

rambled East on Poplar Pike the owl was getting louder. I finally
spotted it at the top of the bare branches of an oak, calling away. I

stopped, watched it for a few minutes then ran home. What a day! A

bald eagle, barred owl, pileated woodpecker and great horned owl.

The first time I've seen all four of those great species in the same
day.
