KTOS held a field trip to Sharp's Ridge in Knoxville, TN on
Saturday morning (24 April 2004). People came and went and
I didn't do a good count but there were probably 40-50
birders present. Thanks to Harold Howell, Tony Headrick,
David Trently, Dan Mooney and everyone else that helped
everyone find some good birds today.
Several good looks at some good birds but I think Tony
Headrick and I are in agreement that the bird of the day
for us was a UT-orange Scarlet Tanager. I've seen Scarlets
that were less red and more orangy looking but nothing like
this. It looked to be the same color as a Baltimore Oriole.
I'm talking BRIGHT orange. And, of course, I left the camera
at home. Scarlet Tanagers were everywhere we looked.
In addition to the Cerulean that Ann mentioned which gave some
great in-the-scope looks to those that stayed late, we had a very
co-operative Cape May that sat around singing letting us get the
scopes on him as well. Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
Blackburnian Warbler and Indigo Bunting were all big hits as
usual and apparently the Wild Turkeys put on a show just before
I got there.
People drifted off before doing a proper check-off but here
are some of the birds I know were seen or heard.
Notice the lack of flycatchers and hummers. White-eyed Vireos
were also strangely absent.
