Hi folks,
To anyone in the East Tennessee area:
Here is an opportunity to give back.
Many of you have read that the Knoxville Chapter of TOS has adopted
Sharps Ridge - one of the premier migration hotspots in this part of
the state. An over look of the Smoky Mountains has been dedicated in
the name of JB Owen, and there are some interpretive signs at this
location. A wheelchair access ramp has been installed. The goal of
all of this work is to return the area to a more family-friendly
location, and it is working. There used to be a lot of illicit
activity there, and with help from the police department, local
clubs, and a lot of volunteer effort, these activities have decreased
a lot.
Now we're focusing on aesthetics.
Last month a group of volunteers led by Mark Campen - Chair of the
KTOS Conservation Committee - picked up lots of trash, and removed
some invasive exotic plants. Good news is that there was less trash
to pick up than during the last cleanup. Bad news is that some
remains.
This Saturday, November 20, we will have another cleanup, and we
would like to have as many people participate as possible. People of
all ages and abilities can lend a hand. Bring gloves, clothes for
changing weather, water, and lunch. Work will start about 9am. If
you have garden tools that could be used for exotics, we'd appreciate
you bringing them. If you have one or more trash bags you could
donate to the cause, we'd appreciate that, too.
Charlie
