[TN-Bird] Seven Roseate Spoonbills - Mud Lake - Shelby Co. Plus

Sept. 28, 2008
Ensley Bottoms, TVA Lake
Mud Lake, Shelby Co. TN

At the Mississippi River this AM, other than a hint of sandbars and dikes
peeking through the muddy waters, only a flock of 5 Lesser Yellowlegs and a
single Black-necked Stilt were seen in an hour's watch.

At TVA Lake in Ensley, a single Black-bellied Whistling Duck was
photographed and the juvenile Sanderling is still running around the "Pits".

After reading about Roseate Spoonbills still to the north of us in Illinois
and to the west of us in Arkansas, I decided to try Mud Lake just to the south
of Memphis and hit the Jackpot, finding 7 birds sitting in the top of a
distant Cypress snag. The birds could be seen through only one opening in the
trees and were about a mile away. I've got some photos and will post them
later.
The snaggled topped Cypress is pretty distinctive and I'll bet the birds
will return there to roost. Just slowly scan the tops of the distant trees.
The
birds were well inside the TN Line. I believe this is the highest number
even found in TN. I've had 3 spoonbills on 2 other occasions, in TN, once
northeast of Reelfoot Lake in Lake Co, and again in Cocklebur Lake just a half
mile
from where these birds were resting.

We also had 24 Forster's Terns, 4 Long-billed Dowitchers, 21 Greater
Yellowlegs, 5 Lesser, 1 Stilt Sandpiper and numerous Pectorals and Least
Sandpipers
working the far side of the lake along with Hooded Mergs, Blue-winged Teal,
Green-winged Teal, Mallards, Wood and Pintail Ducks.

Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
