[TN-Bird] Seven Islands trip report

east Tenn, Knox County

On Sunday, Oct 24, 10 members of the Knoxville Chapter of TOS birded at Seven
Islands Wildlife Refuge (exit 402- Midway Rd - off I-40, go south 3 miles,
following signs to the refuge).

Swarms of lady beetles greeted us (anyone know if birds eat these?). There
were also lots of sparrows but for much of the walk, the angle of the sun made
it difficult to see them well. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWs are back. We saw over a
dozen of them in the areas with the house and two barns (near the Purple
Martin house). There were also several along the road back toward the parking
lot.
Other sparrows:
SAVANNAH - mostly in the level fields
SONG - plenty of these all over
SWAMP - not too many of these yet
FIELD - most of these were seen near the parking area
WHITE-THROATED - not too many yet, but they'll arrive in big numbers soon.

Notables:
at least 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTs
A lone CANADA GOOSE (usually more than this)
about 20 WOOD DUCKs flew over around sunset.
1 NORTHERN HARRIER, female.
1 COOPER'S HAWK
1 RED-TAILED HAWK
1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
2 AMERICAN KESTRELs
1 N BOBWHITE
a large flock of AMERICAN CROWs, maybe close to a hundred. I mention these
because we often miss crows on walks here.
1 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE - could it be here for the winter?
1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (only warbler)
BLUE GROSBEAKS - I didn't expect any of these, but there were at least 2 near
the parking area.

We walked through some fields hoping to find some rarer sparrows but there
weren't many birds in there, mostly Song and Swamp Sparrows. Did see a group
of E MEADOWLARKs in the short grassy field.
