Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge Knox County Tuesday, June 21, 2005 It was another eventful day at the Seven Islands MAPS station. We caught 68 birds of 15 species. This includes 14 recaptures of previously-banded birds (from 8 species) and includes one bird that doesn?t count for the MAPS data ? a recently fledged Grasshopper Sparrow that Jim Giocomo hand-caught. He?d been hearing the chicks call, and during a time when the nets were relatively quiet, he and I went to that location. I didn?t see the bird, 2 feet from me, until Jim pointed it out, and scooped it up. A real cutey with disproportionately long legs. The day was clear and a bit cool for this time of year, which was nice. Things were going pretty evenly until 15 Red-winged Blackbirds decided to hit 2 of our nets. There were 8 of them in one net, and a lone Song Sparrow was also there. Poor little guy must have been overwhelmed! So far this year we (mostly Jim) have confirmed breeding of 18 species at Seven Islands, by either finding nests, or local young. There are a number of other species that probably nest there based on the fact that they are heard singing on all or most trips. This is 224 captures in 4 banding days. Not too shabby! Today?s list of banded birds: X + Y = banded birds + recaptures Grasshopper Sparrow 0 = 1 Northern Cardinal 2 + 0 = 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 3 + 0 = 2 Red-winged Blackbird 15 + 0 = 15 Brown Thrasher 3 + 1 = 4 Carolina Wren 2 + 3 = 5 Orchard Oriole 1 + 0 = 1 Song Sparrow 8 + 2 = 10 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 + 0 = 2 Common Yellowthroat 2 + 2 = 4 American Goldfinch 5 + 0 = 5 Field Sparrow 5 + 0 = 5 Eastern Phoebe 5 + 1 = 6 Indigo Bunting 0 + 3 = 3 Eastern Towhee 0 + 1 = 1 Charlie ******************************************************************* Charlie Muise, Naturalist in Great Smoky Mountains National Park "To the dull mind all nature is leaden.
