Saturday morning I birded Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in eastern Knox County
from 9:00 to noon. The Knoxville Chapter of TOS has a field trip scheduled
there for this evening, so I thought I'd scout it out a bit - I wish we had
scheduled the trip for the morning! We'll be there by about 4:20 - anyone's
welcome!
I had nine (maybe ten) sparrow species and 5 warblers...Blue Grosbeaks and a
screech owl.
Highlight was a possible CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the field near the parking
area (just past the trees through the opening at the back of the parking area
fence, left side of the trees in the tall weeds). This was a buffier version
of the one seen last Saturday at Kyker Bottoms in Blount County. The reason
I'm not sure if it was a Clay-colored is that it didn't have a complete white
central crown stripe. The white went from the center of the head back, but it
was brown, with heavy black streaks in the front half. Everything else looked
good for a Clay-colored. Maybe we'll get lucky and find it tonight.
There are now several areas where wide paths have been cut through the fields,
giving excellent access to the abundant sparrow habitat.
Here's the list:
