Wednesday morning (March 24) I visited Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in east
Knox County as part of a scouting trip for the University of Tennessee
Entomology and Plant Pathology Department which hopes to begin some studies of
insects and plant diseases at the park. While there the following birds were
seen:
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Blue Heron - there are at least 3 nests visible on islands in the French
Broad River.
Canada Goose
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Bald Eagle - 2 adults
Red-tailed Hawk
Wild Turkey - 4 females
NO BOBWHITE - We rarely miss this species here, but a lot of the fields have
been cut and/or burned to aid in establishing native grasses there. Once these
grasses grow well we expect the quail to come back in big numbers.
Red-bellied Woodpecker
N Flicker
E Phoebe
Am Crow
Blue Jay
Carolina Wren
House Wren
E Bluebird
Am Robin
N Mockingbird
Eur Starling
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Palm Warbler - 2
N Cardinal
E Towhee
Filed Sparrow - many
VESPER SPARROW - at least one.
Swamp Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow - many!
White-throated Sparrow
E Meadlowlark
Red-winged Blackbird
Only butterflies seen were Clouded Sulphur
No dragonflies
