[TN-Bird] Selasphorus Hummingbird Sighting, Elizabethton, TN

I received a phone call this morning (Wednesday, Oct. 26) from Danny
Taylor of Elizabethton, Carter Co., TN.

She informed me that she and her husband saw a Rufous Hummingbird at
their feeder on Monday, Oct. 24, at about 12:50 p.m. They were having
lunch and saw the bird visit the feeder.

In April of 1999, the Taylors also hosted a Rufous Hummingbird for
several days. This bird (an adult male) was seen by several members ?
myself included ? of the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS and
documented in photographs. This visit was exceptional because it took
place in spring rather than late fall/early winter.

I am confident in the ability of the Taylors to distinguish a
Ruby-throated from a Selasphorus hummingbird. I am sure they identified
the bird as a Rufous, however, because they are unfamiliar with
Allen's. They did not succeed in getting a look to confirm if the bird
might possibly have been an adult male.

They have not seen the bird since the visit on Monday, although Danny
Taylor said she will keep me updated if other sightings are made.

Hampton, TN
