[tn-bird] Scootn' for Scoters

Oct. 19-20, 2002
Paris Landing/Pace Point Area
Henry - Benton Co. TN

I need a Black Scoter and Mike had one at Britton Ford earlier in the week;
the time is right for the passage of scoters heading south. I usually can get
a Black at Pickwick in February but missed the bird this year so now will be
my last chance left for this years' list. My best bet has always been off the
right side of the point on the shallow shoal mixed in with Scaup but the
water was too choppy and there are few Scaup in at this time.

I ran through all the points and creek areas on both days finding some great
new areas down on the south end of the Big Sandy Reach. The first break I had
was on Saturday when 3 dark ducks were jumped from Eagle Creek by a boat.
They flew past me skimming the water and I nailed them as Surf Scoters. I
would later find them off the Point and was able to get IDable photos. On
Sunday I spotted a group of 5 chunky black birds on the water out from Sandy
Beach otherwise known by locals as Budwieser Beach. I watched them from
different angles as they slept but another boat got them up and these were
White-winged Scoters, a great find but still no Black.

At Britton Ford on both days there were NO ducks but I did find a great
viewing area near the town of Big Sandy where there were a thousand ducks and
geese spread over a huge shallow area. There were Canada Geese, a lone Snow,
a few domestic geese, Gadwall Galore! Wigeon, Mallards, Black Ducks,
Blue-wing and Green-winged Teal, Shoveler, Pintail, Ring-necked, Lesser Scaup
and Ruddy Ducks. With the 2 scoters that made 15 species of waterfowl for the
weekend.

Still need a Black Scoter.................

Good Birding!!!
