A Scissor-tailed Flycatcher flew across the road just a few feet in front of me Saturday afternoon (13 June 2004) just as I was about to drive across Ft. Loudon Dam in Loudon Co., TN. The long tail, pale grey plumage and pink under the wings was obvious. After crossing the dam, I turned around and pulled in to the overlook parking lot at the dam. The bird had flown toward the electric towers and the substation at the powerhouse of the dam beside this parking lot. Unfortunately it started to rain as I got out of the car and it soon turned into a severe thunderstorm. I decided that an electrical substation wasn't the safest place to be right then so I left without refinding the bird. I did see several Black-crowned Night-Herons feeding below the dam by diving (ok, plop-ing) into the river for fish chopped up by the turbines. I've seen this behavior many times below Cherokee Dam. Also saw an Osprey blown off its perch and almost driven to the ground by very strong winds during the storm.
