[tn-bird] Saturday's Radnor sightings

My wife Bonnie and I were part of the group of 20 (Jan Shaw counted them)
birders who arrived at Radnor Lake to search for the warblers and
flycatchers mentioned in Chris Sloan's post. This was a truly impressive
turnout (in both numbers and distance traveled) for such an early morning
outing, especially considering the conditions.

The weather was overcast and cold (I had on several layers including
a winter jacked and gloves), but the plethora of CONNECTICUTs
warmed the hearts of many of the birders. Bonnie and I were some
of the last to arrive and last to leave. We did reasonably well,
getting good looks at a silent MOURNING WARBLER just past the West
Parking Lot where I had seen it the previous day. To my amazement I
ended up seeing 3 different CONNECTICUT WARBLERs, while Bonnie got an
impeded view of one walking along a horizontal branch.

The CONNECTICUTs gave great vocal performances at several of their
typical Lake Trail locations. Walkie talkies kept us updated on
the various situations. While many of the birders got their life
sightings, it is perhaps not surprising that I talked to at least 2
people who will have to try again another day. The CONNECTICUT WARBLER
can be so frustrating. In one case a bird was singing less than 10 feet
away from me but was not visually sighted by the 3 birders searching for
it.

Arriving at the West Parking Lot around 9:30 am to leave, there was
a tremendous amount of construction noise, loud talking and and
electric saw going full bore. Nevertheless, we heard a CONNECTICUT
singing in the woods ajacent to this activity. In the relatively
open understory next to the parking lot as seen from Otter Creek Road,
I got my best views of the day of a CONNECTICUT.

With the passing of the front, I suspect the situation of the past few
days will change substantially. I'll be out at Radnor on Monday morning
to have another look.
