Despite the cold winds and dropping temps it was a good day to be out
yesterday. And with Jeff, Mike, and I there is never a dull moment even
when we're not seeing many birds! That's exactly the way it was about the
middle of the afternoon yesterday. We took the slow birding as an
opportunity to look and a few spring wildflowers and blooming trees and to
hit some Shelby Co. and Tipton Co. roads that I hadn't been on in quite a
while and I believe that some were new territory for Mike. We did have a
single Northern Parula singing near Chucalissa just outside T.O. Fuller
State Park before the temps started dropping rapidly. This was first
returning migrant warbler of the year. After the temps dropped yesterday
afternoon we drove through Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park and made several
stops without seeing or hearing a single bird! The birds just disappeared,
hiding from the cold northwest winds! Can't say that I blame them much! I
stood on the southeast side of the truck as much as possible myself! :-)
Jeff mentioned that we had seen many Belted Kingfishers yesterday. Well
this morning as I left my house the 2nd bird I saw was, you guessed it, a
kingfisher! I also had one of the local Barn Owls flying silently in
circles over my house tonight as I turned on one of the outside lights to go
feed my dog. I just happened to look up and see it flapping and gliding.
It must have been sitting in the top of the old Black Oak behind our house
and flew as I walked out.
Good birding,
Mark Greene
