Sometimes nature manages to throw in a special treat when you least expect it. While taking ?the long way? home from work this afternoon, I managed to pass by the Heritage Marsh in north central White County. Noticing what appeared to be several Sandhill Cranes flying into the heavily watered marsh, I decided to stop and take a better look. Much to my surprise, the cranes just kept coming and coming in groups ranging from 5 or 6 to 50-75. From a ridge above the marsh, I scoped as much of the marsh and adjacent fields as could be seen and counted at least 700-800 cranes. Allowing for the areas I could not see clearly and the continuing flights of incoming cranes, I would estimate the total population to be 1200-1500! To the noisy and constant burbling of the Sandhill multitude was added the occasional calls of various ducks and Canada Geese. All in all, it was a delightful gift at the end of a long day at work. Given the current condition of the marsh and its environs, I can?t wait for the Spring party to begin!
