The staff at Bells Bend Outdoor Center has been driving by the turnip fields
where the whooping cranes were seen last year and although we haven't seen
them yet, today (Dec. 19, 2008) we did see 5 sandhill cranes in that area. They
were at the back of the field with the green gate where the whooping cranes
were seen last year. We'll keep watching for the whoopers.

Wonder if the five sandhills are part of the nine that flew over my deck and
seemed to break up just as they passed over my deck on December 6? Part of
that post is below. If I hadn't had to get in out of the freezing weather that
day, I would have kept them under better surveillance. I really thought they
would go to Bell's Bend if they were not leaving there. They did not approach
my deck from the Bell's Bend area, so I sort of ruled that possibility out.
I'll keep an "eyeball" out to see if the whoopers delight me with a fly-over
when and IF they come back this year! That would really MAKE my New Year!!!!!!!

PART OF MY POST FROM DEC. 6:
Nine sandhill cranes just flew right over my deck (2:55 p.m. CST) in the
Charlotte Park area of West Nashville heading southeast toward the WSMV tower
and
possibly on toward Williamson County. Of course, they COULD sort of double
back and go over to Bell's Bend just about a half-mile or less across the
river.
They seemed to be sort of gearing down, getting a little out of "formation"
and looking for a landing place
