Hop-In Refuge, Obion Co. & surrounding areas in Obion, Gibson, & Weakley
Counties
I went by Hop-In Refuge in SE Obion County today and there were Sandhill Cranes
everywhere! I counted over 700 cranes sitting on the refuge (it was impossible
to get an exact count as birds were coming & going the whole time I was there
and they were stacked in there 6 or 7 deep in places)! I saw another 300 or so
in fields around and adjacent to the refuge and in flight so there are about
1000 Sandhill Cranes in the area!
Most of the cranes on the refuge are way back off the road but there were about
50 or so just beyond the gate.
There were also a few Snow Geese and a bunch of Killdeer (200+) on the refuge
but I didn't see any other shorebirds and very few ducks but more may be coming
in there at dusk. I was there about 2 pm.
I also had a small flock of 24 Brewer's Blackbirds just north of the refuge
feeding in a corn stubble field.
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!
Good birding,
Mark Greene
