[TN-Bird] Sandhill Crane in a strange place!

Great Smoky Mountains NP. Cade's Cove - Hyatt lane

Today, July 24, 2008 at 9:15 I was photographing deer in Cade's Cove whe=
n a fellow photographer in the area spoke up and said, "What is that cra=
zy Great Blue doing landing in the middle of the field?" I looked up a=
bout the time the bird was dropping his legs into the tall grass, and im=
mediately saw the shape of a Sandhill Crane. In disbelief, I trekked abo=
ut 200 feet back through the field off of HYATT LANE, and sure enough, i=
t was one lone Sandhill! Not sure of the status of them in the Cove, bu=
t definitely was a first for me there. Was able to click off identifiab=
le images, though distant, in the tall grass. He also vocalized a coupl=
e times. Has anyone seen any South bound Cranes yet? =

Cool!
I reported it to the office on the way out, and they were very skeptical=
.. Oh well. I have the proof, plus another observer.
I watched and followed him around over 30 min. trying to get a good phot=
o.
