[TN-Bird] Rufous Hummingbird Day 64

Willie made his first appearance at the feeder at 6:27 a.m. this morning
and was a little frustrated because we had blocked off two of the four
ports. We do this when we know someone is coming to see him since if we
don't he inevitably goes to the back port while they are looking; Dee
Thompson is coming by on her way to the TOS meeting. But he always
adjusts after the first attempt and he is feeding well now in his usual
morning mode of quick visits for one sip of no more than a second or
two. Later on after daylight he will settle down and sit and drink.

We were concerned he would decide our feeder area was not a happy place
after yesterday and would leave for Arizona last night. With the wind
and cold the yard birds occupied both of Willie's favorite sitting
bushes all day and he had to go far away and wait a long time between
drinks for activity to subside. At one time he did not drink for almost
an hour and when it was quiet he gulped down the sugar water in a single
long slurp that lasted almost a minute. We would like to move the
feeder but are concerned that might be even more confusing to him and
would also deprive him of a nearby bush for sitting. If it wasn't too
cruel to the other birds, we'd just stop putting out food for them so
they would leave Willie's area. Seems like traffic congestion is not
limited to humans.
