Willie took his "just checking to see if the sugar water is still there"
drink this morning at 6:40 a.m. We've decided that first quick trip is
just to verify that the feeder is still filled because he never lands
and actually just does a fly-by quick sip. But the brief look we get at
him is always a relief as we then know he made it through the night and
did not leave.
We are wondering if we are humanizing him too much. Virginia was
watching him late yesterday to see his last visit to the feeder. Since
it was a mild day we had turned off the heat lamp and when he came at
3:50 p.m. she swears he sat on the feeder and looked left and right at
both the lights as if he was wondering what happened to his spotlight.
She turned on the heat lamp and the next trip he moved to the port
directly under it as if to indicate he got what he wanted. Such behavior
sure makes you at least consider this little guy might be communicating.
