Beth Schilling, Jean Alexander, David Johnson, and I left Rankin about 8PM (31 Aug) and the Ruff was still present. We had great but distant looks by walking out to the point from the parking area before the tipple. At least 12 birders were there between 5-8pm and everyone got to see it. She was actively feeding most of the time and spent much of the time near the yellowlegs. Buff-breasted were hard to miss. Widely scattered and feeding near the water as well as higher up in the drier areas. I tallied 15 species of plovers and shorebirds and realized later I hadn't picked a Western out of the peeps. I did not have any gulls but Wallace Coffee and the others went on to the end of the road and reported several Ring-billed but no Lesser Black-backed. Lake level is right at 981 ft. I didn't focus on counting but highlights and, ahem, rough estimates below (sorry, Wallace started the puns) Blue-winged Teal, at least 1 N Shoveler, at least 1 White Ibis, 5 immatures Am Golden-Plover, 3 Semipalmated Plover, a few Killdeer, lots Spotted Sandpiper, 6+ Greater Yellowlegs, few Lesser Yellowlegs, more Ruff, 1 Sanderling, 4 immatures Semipalmated Sandpiper, most of the peeps, 30-40ish? Least Sandpiper, fewer than semis Baird's Sandpiper, 2 Pectoral Sandpiper, 20-30? Stilt Sandpiper, 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper, 20+ widely scattered so hard to count Dowitchet, 2 in poor light but looked to be Short-billed Large group of a few hundred swallows with Bank and Tree being the most numerous but also N Rough-winged, Cliff, and Barn. Good birding and good company!
